Asian art treasures from the estate of a passionate collector headline Michaan's April 17 Gallery Auction. Fine famille rose porcelains, Han pottery, figures of Buddha... to name just a few from the array of fine pieces, an exciting opportunity for seasoned as well as new collectors. The collection filled the Piedmont, CA home of the late Dr. Richard I. Stone, who studied the origin and meaning of every object. Highlights include an ancient bronze censer, a graceful double-gourd dragon vase, an embroidered military rank badge centering a fierce tiger, and a number of large fresco paintings depicting celestial deities. Also offered this month is a collection of painted signs and advertising, including several of local interest, from a Sebastopol, CA single owner collection. These wonderful pieces of Americana are increasingly hard to find and will attract many bids. Diamond rings are featured in April, including a vintage platinum ring with old European-cut stones and another from Tiffany & Co. The 20k gold Indian jewelry suite with freshwater cultured pearls is estimated at $500-$700. It's a great month for earrings, whether you prefer sapphires and diaomonds or dramatic Baroque and Tahitian cultured pearls. Estate jewelry includes the charm bracelet with 20 irresistible charms from around the world. The art of Picasso anchors the April selection of fine art: "Bouquet de Fleurs," the offset lithograph from Far Gallery, New York is estimated at $3,000-$5,000 and the sensual Cubist etching, "Le Couple" is estimated at $2,000-$4,000. Many more works of art, at a wide variety of estimated price points, are offered in this sale. Orrin White's "Carmel Cypress" and "Seascape #2" by Frank William Cuprien are among the works by California artists. The auction includes estate furniture, antique Persian carpets and fine silver such as the "Salem" mid-century sterling flatware set by Tiffany & Co.

The Beat Generation, rock stars, Gisele Bundchen! — Michaan’s welcomes spring with a buzzy Gallery Auction energized by exciting works of art, glamorous jewels and much more. “Birth,” a 1958 Bruce Conner painting purchased from the artist by the current owner, is offered at $25,000-$35,000. Also offered are portraits of Keith Richards and Mick Jagger by Annie Leibovitz, and a fierce mixed media study of Bundchen by Raphael Mazzucco (b. 1965), artist and fashion photographer. “Waves,” a captivating 1985 seascape by Pop artist James Gill, is another fine art find. Jewelry includes jadeite jade and colored gemstones — a big, luscious brown diamond ring, a pendant of deep blue tanzanite — and chic diamond pieces such as the glittering geometric statement necklace in 14k yellow gold. Traditional Furnishings and Old Masters Auction
March 17 & 18: by appointment March 19: 9am - eoa
Nearly 300 lots of fine furniture, decorations and works of fine art will be offered in this specialty auction of Traditional Furnishings and Old Masters. Featured is the property of Arthur Thomson, an inveterate San Francisco collector of English and French paintings, furniture and decorations. A top highlight is "A Curious Herbal," the complete two-volume set of 500 hand-colored engravings of medicinal plants by Elizabeth Blackwell (British, 1707-1758). Created by an extraordinary woman, "A Curious Herbal" was an enormous success in its day; the set in our March 19 sale, never before offered at auction, is estimated at $8,000-$12,000. Mary Beale (British, 1632-1697) one of very few female portrait painters in 17th Century London, is another featured artist in this sale. Her splendid portrait of Hon. Anne Howard, Countess of Carlisle, is estimated at $6,000-$8,000. Also offered is "Countess Margaret Spencer" by John Hoppner (British, 1758-1810), a marvelous piece of history estimated at $5,000-$7,000. No Old Masters collection would be complete without at least one view of Venice, and Michaan's offers two fine examples in this sale: "Venice Canal" by Rafael Senet y Perez (1856-1926) and "A Venetian Backwater" (1849-1889). The large group of Old Masters prints includes works by Rembrandt, Jan Luyken, Cornelis Cortis and Andrea Mantegna. Fine early American furniture from the estate of Arthur Thomson includes the Federal secretary desk, circa 1800, with tambour doors concealing small drawers and niches ($4,000-$6,000). The handsome 5-drawer 18th Century William and Mary burl mulberry dresser is estimated at $2,000-$3,000. Upholstered furniture and fine handmade carpets are offered. The selection of chandeliers, sconces and mirrors includes the Napoleon III carved giltwood pier mirror, a rare find measuring nearly 11' tall x 6' wide. Treasures for the collector's 'cabinet of curiosities' include Sèvres porcelain, delightful miniatures and cloisonné, silver, rock crystal and cut glass. Estimates for auction lots of fine furniture and decorations range from $500 to $15,000.

Spectacular diamond jewelry, museum quality modern art and exceptional Art Deco furnishings will be sold at Michaan's Winter Fine Sale featuring property from the Sylvia Blumenfeld Trust. Highlights include the platinum ring centering a pear-cut fine diamond of nearly 8 carats (estimated at $80,000-$120,000). A large untitled abstract acrylic painting ($150,000-$200,000) by Sam Francis (1923-1994) tops the list of fine artworks by influential modernists from California and beyond. Sylvia Blumenfeld (1921-2018) was a talented collector whose education and world travels shaped her interests and tastes. Her estate includes jewels by designers such as Van Cleef & Arpels and Buccellati, as well as luxury timepieces. Beautiful furniture and decorations from the Blumenfeld Trust include Baltic Neoclassical pieces from the early 19th century. Fine art includes works by the Bay Area Figurative Movement painters Nathan Oliveira, Elmer Bischoff and James Weeks. In this sale Michaan's also offers a superb collection of art and Art Deco furniture and decorations from a San Francisco apartment designed by Steven Volpe and featured in Architectural Digest, August 2017. A second, complementary Art Deco collection includes the designs of Adnet, Ramsay, Coulon and Maison Baguès. In addition to the Sylvia Blumenfeld Trust property, which includes watercolors by Diego Rivera and Toulouse-Lautrec, this sale offers fine Russian paintings from the turn of the 20th century and etchings by Durer. A very special highlight is “PREM" by Robert Indiana. This large steel sculpture is a variation on the theme of Indiana's iconic "LOVE," with the word for "love" spelled in Hindi; estimated at $250,000-$300,000.
