Attributed to Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining): Horizontal Scroll of Snowy Landscape

Lot: 5219

Ink and pigment on silk, bearing one apocryphal imperial seal reading Yuanmingyuan zhi bao and signatures reading Lang Shining, also known as Giuseppe Castiglione, Zhou Kun and Shen Yuan, with five seals, preceded by two titles, one with a seal reading Shichuan Laoren zhi bao, followed by three colophons, one in Manchu, and two in Chinese bearing signatures reading Hong Zhou and Yu Minzhong, with a yellow cloth sleeve and carved jade toggle.

Imperial Seasonal Separation Poem, calligraphy by Hong Zhou (1712-1770)

Imperial Snow Scene, calligraphy by Official Minister Yu Minzhong (1714-1780).

Translation of the poem: After the night with snow clouds, the forbidden forest sees the frigid day. I regret the lack of the light and wait for a few hours to explore the landscape. It is difficult to pick the flower branches from the frozen tree. The scent of the plum blossoms is absent. The glorious scene of the artificial mountains soaring in the thin air evokes jade towers.

Size of the image: 21 3/4 x 91 inches (55.5 x 231 cm).
