MC ESCHER Sphere with Fishes woodcut on Japanese tissue paper

(Dutch 1898-1972)
Sphere Surface with Fish
Woodcut on Japanese tissue paper.
Image: 13 3/8 x 13 3/8 inches Sheet: 14 1/4 x 14 1/4 inches.
Signed in pencil lower left: MC Escher and annotated lower right in Dutch: eigendruk. Signed with initial stamp and date in the image bottom of the sphere: MCE VII 58.
Provenance: Purchased from the artist in the Netherlands by the owners grandfather and passed to the current owner through descent.
Literature: Bool, F.H. et al. M.C. Escher: His Life and Complete Graphic Work. Amsterdam: Meulenhoff, 1981 English-language edition, New York: Harry N. Abrams, 1982. no. 427
CONDITION: In overall good condition. The work has been restored by Zukor Art Conservation, Oakland CA in 2018. There was mechanical separation of the print from mount by delimitating board down to the last layer reassessment of possible removal of heat-set tissue from the verso. Note: Testing showed that discolored heat-set tissue initially separated along one margin quite easily. The tissue had dried out and was brittle. The image area was also tested for removal it also came off without any loss or delimitation of the paper (ink very likely strengthened the thin support) and the image was cleared of the tissue. However, once the margins were returned to, that adhesive layer did not separate well and cracked the paper beneath. Solvents were tried to soften the adhesive (alcohol, acetone) but the un-printed margins were too fragile to be lifted. Since there was already partial removal of the print from the adhesive tissue, it was necessary to remove the fractured, partially adhered margins and line the print with a similar, Japanese tissue, original dimensions were retained.

Estimate: $7000 - $9000

CONDITION: In overall good condition. The work has been restored by Zukor Art Conservation, Oakland CA in 2018. (Previous condition: Print is in fairly good condition the only damage is warpage primarily on the top edge and some slight denting overall. There are two strips of Japanese paper used at hinges at corners of the verso that are also causing some unevenness and a crease on the top right). The conservationist did minor surface cleaning, mechanical and aqueous removal of paper hinges on the verso. Attributed to Chuah Thean Teng (Malaysia, 1914-2008): Mother and Children

Batik dye on cloth laid on board, framed on light box, signed Teng to the lower left.
Painting size: 36 x 24 inches.
Chuah Thean Teng is commonly acknowledged as the founder of modern batik art, transforming the notion of batik as craft to its acceptance within the Malayan art world from the 1950s onwards as a form of modern art.

Batik is the wax-resist dye technique used to fasten different colours on cloth. The inspiration to create batik paintings struck Chuah Thean Teng in 1953 after the closure of his batik cloth factory in Penang. Unwilling to discard his large stock of leftover imported dyes of different colours, rolls of white cloth, wax and brushes, Teng took a turn from floral patterns of commercial batik and dabbled in figurative designs. With the help of a wax-containing tool made of brass or copper called tjantjing, he went through a laborious process of applying and removing wax to ensure different dyes only appeared on certain parts of the cloth. After two years of experimentation, he succeeded in creating a small batik pointillist self-portrait.

Following that, Teng, as he is popularly known, found the patronage of a a few influential art historians and art dealers and was given the opportunity to showcase his batik creations. He quickly adopted the motifs that were most central to Malayan art at that time, painting scenes of Malayan daily life.
