Provenance: Artist to the Ricker Family of Poland Spring Resort, PA, acquired by Rutgers Art History Professor Richard Durnin, Ledges Gallery, Rye Beach NH, purchased by a private collector then acquired by the current owner.
Notes: Additional elements provided by Doug Nelson, Founder of Ledges Galleries:

The painting was examined under ultraviolet light to see if there were restoration or additions made. Cleaning and touch up of minor losses were done. Pigment analysis and brushwork analysis were made to draw comparisons to artists known works. Materials framing are in line with the period and known geographic origin of the artists work.

The Ricker family owned the Poland Spring Inn and Water Company in Maine and held annual summer exhibitions of well known American European artists for many years. This painting came from the Ricker estate via the retired Rutgers Art History Professor Richard Durnin who was a friend and had a summer home in Norway, Maine. He focused his collection primarily on Maine works but picked up other things he came across. We have more from him in our collection.

18th Century British School, The Guy Brothers, circa 1770

(18th century),
The Guy Brothers, circa 1770,
oil on canvas,
canvas: 36.25 x 29 inches, framed: 43 x 35.5 inches,
Provenance: Private Collection, Australia (circa 1900) Private Collection, Hawaii (January, 2001) Adamson-Duvannes Collection (Downey, CA)
The condition of the Guy Brothers is as follows: Fair. The painting has been relined. There is inpainting present in 90 of the left figures face. There is also small inpainting to the left and right of the left figures face. The right figures face has inpainting mostly on the right side of the face. The hands of both figures have inpainting all over them. The hands have been basically repainted by an unknown hand during restoration at which time this was done is unknown. There is scattered inpainting on the left figures clothing, at the left side of the jacket under the arm and next to the buttons (approx. 2 inches long), and a spot below the bottom button. Also on the left figures leg closest to the word Guy, there is inpainting on the leg at the shin area (approx. 2 inches long). Then there is scattered in painting throughout the artwork in the sky there are some small areas of inpainting all over the left quadrant and through the upper left quadrant and center top quadrant of the painting. There are also scattered areas of inpainting on the two hats at the bottom left quadrant of the painting. In the center between the two brothers is a weird highlight under blacklight, it is not inpainting, but perhaps some type of varnish that is fluorescing under UV//Blacklight. You can see this highlight also in the area where the two boys feet touch at bottom center of painting. At the top right quadrant there is inpainting in the tree in 2 areas, one is small and the other area is large (approx. 5 inches long). There is also scattered light inpainting on the right figures legs in the white area. There is very light craquelure throughout, consistent with age. Otherwise, there are no other visible issues apparent. It is a very old painting that has been restored, and above I hope I have explained where the areas of restoration took place. Again, the work has been relined. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.
