Seven Continental Vinagrettes including a Gold-Filled Pear
England and Germany. Circa 1740 and later. Lots includes a circa 1740 Germanscrew-top pear form- vinaigrette engraved to the top with ribbing, the sides with Queen Mother standing and holding a staff and sheaves of wheat bracketting the initials S W B. The base with stars and cross hatching and vegetation. Sponge on red thread present to interior. Sold together with a possibly English oval form silver vinaigrette, the exterior lid engraved 1841 in a diamond within a laurel wreath to edge the interior gold washed lid pierced and reticulated with laurel wreath and monogram CS, the base also gold-washed. Three filigree vinaigrettes of white metal. Another silver plated example shaped as a flask, with scrolls to sides of a shield and another flask form example of mother-of-pearl with gold-plated edges and top. Minute white metal dropper and a pair of toy scissors also included in this lot. Marks abraded from first two articles, possibly to make importation easier. No marks observed on others. 14.5 dwt, the first two items the pear 1 1/2 H. By descent from the Kaumheimer family, Stuttgart, Germany. Dent and some wear to first dent wear and scratches to second lids absent to flask. Filigree examples and the other examples worn.

France. Circa 1875. The baluster form vase on waisted foot, painted with Florentine Renaissance style grotesques, scrolls and masks under bands of laurel leaves. Hand-painted black H to the underside. Approximate dimensions: 18 3/4 inches high.. Condition: The vase body fell off the foot at some point. Repair to the bottom of the body where it meets the foot, with overpainting to the outside and the original visible cracks to the interior. Light surface wear.

Circa 1980. The vase of baluster form, painted in an eggshell-finish with pastel-hued enamels with scantily-clad Venus and cupid, with blue and pink ribbons, in a clearing by a plinth, surrounded by grasses and flowering roses and trees, between teal blue neck and foot, painted with parcel gilt scrolls, gilt bronze mask handles and mounts. Due to the use of a single long screwed rod, this item has not been checked for marks. 25 3/4 H. Minor wear to enamels body drilled for rod.
Second half 20th Century. Comprising an urn with goat-head handles and two wide- mouthed vases all decorated in relief with figural processions and garlands in typical polychrome enamels parcel gilt trim. All three with undeglaze blue N under crown mark, one vase with illegible red Made in... mark. Approximate dimensions: Urn 13 3/4 inches high, vases 11 inches high.. Condition: Urn appears to be missing an original lid. Two miniscule chips to vase bases, light rubbing to the gilt.

Crossed L a mark to the underside. Lightly-incised numerals near the false Svres mark. Approximate dimensions: 21 1/2 inches high.. Condition: Applied plastic is peeling in some areas. Some surface marks throughout. No apparent cracks, chips, or repairs.

English Parian Porcelain Figural Group of Nymph, Fawn and Doe
England. Circa 1865. After the original sculpture by Charles Bell Birch, R.A. (1832-1893). The nude nymph seated on a tree stump embellished with ferns and ivies, caressing the garlanded doe to her left side, while the faun on her lap licks her ring finger. All atop a cylindrical base. Later decorated with a band of gilt decoration. The rear base of the sculpture incised C. B. Birch. Sc. 1866. 19 H., 8 3/4 Diameter. The full size version was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1867 and was illustrated in the Art Journal in 1869. Probably done for the Art Union of London. One foliate front has broken off from the base.
England. Circa 1880. Modelled seated on a tree stump, in modest dress, oak leaves and grasses descending toward the base. Her head, slightly down-cast, eyes looking up. On a cylindrical base, low moulded name plate OPHELIA to front. Unmarked. Attributed to Robinson and Leadbetter. 22 H. x 7 1/2 Diameter. Good condition. Shallow 1/4 chip to base underside. Otherwise, no restorations, chips or cracks observed.

Staffordshire, England. Circa 1876. The squat, ovulat shaped footbath with two broad, scroll-form handles applied to the sides. Transfer-printed in lavender blue with trellis, with birds in cartouches, including pheasants, grouse, quail, etc. The same motif, upside down, to the base. The wide center band featuring an extensive motif of oak trees framing an eagle on a rocky perch near a waterfall, possibly Niagara. The scene, even more elaborate, to the interior face. including mountain peaks, possibly from the Catskills. The mark, printed to the underside in the same lavender blue, an eagle, holding a ribbon, indistinctly printed with the maker. Impressed 18 to underside. 9 H. x 22 L. x 16 D., approximate dimensions. A few firing flaws disguised by sprigs. One 1 inch long firing tear to rim underside. Most of the modelling work on the service appears to have been done by J.F. Eberlein and J.G. Ehder, whose work records include numerous references to the service.

The scallop-moulded oval tureen base issuing two out-curling scroll-form handles, outlined in gold enamel the conforming top with voided areas for the handles to the sides and step-moulded, the knop formed in high relief as a recumbant cow. The top and sides painted in bright polychrome enamels with floral sprays and sprigs the cover with gilt to the voided ends. Impressed shield mark to underside of base, with O next to it. Of shaped oval form, the gallery formed as pierced, ribbed trellis, with scroll-form handles to the sides, painted with bouquets and floral springs in polychrome enamels. Both with impressed shield marks one incised with 43 triangle and S the other with 44 .S near the shield. 2 1/2 H. x 12 1/2 W. x 9 3/4 D. By descent from the Kaumheimer family, Stuttgart, Germany. To one: Three short firing cracks along upper rim and a 1 long vertical crack from upper rim toward base, visible to interior but not visible to basket exterior. The other with 2 long firing crack along seam to interior face, where it meets the gallery wall a 2 long shallow crack to upper rim, at the widest point. A glaze blow out (also known as a kiln speckle) that turned into a hairline fracture at the upper rim and firing cracks to handles.

The verso, Erstarb-or lebt/ Er ist es werth,/Dafs Ihn/Ein Angedenchen /ehrt reserved within a wreath of pink roses and blue forget-me-nots. All under gilt bands. The second, also a straight-sided can and saucer, painted with a pale yellow ground, under a gilt bands and a band of gilt scrolling Florentine flowers and flower heads with a vedutta of the named view, Residenz Stdt/Mnchen. The third a waisted straight-sided cup on stepped foot, with curling scroll handle, with gilt bands to rims, and gilt reserve with a long view of the state residence, named Mnchen toward the bottom. The black can, with very light shield impression to saucer base the yellow-ground can incised I /impressed shield/P and three lines above the saucer incised I/impressed shield and L over an I, with three lines to the side, and the cup with the view of Munich marked I shield V over I, with two lines. The two cans 2 1/2 H. and 2 3/4 H., the saucers, 5 1/2 Diameter. The tallest, 3 3/4 H., 5 Diameter the saucer. By descent from the Kaumheimer family, Stuttgart, Germany. The commemorative: shallow light nicks to footrim of can and saucer, the handle slightly wonky, all as manufactured minor wear and rubbing to gold and enamels. The yellow ground: shallow, light nicks to footrim of both can and saucer, very minor wear and rubbing. The third example, handle broken off, reglued, and regilt, long y-crack to base of cup. gilding wear to cup and saucers.

Including a rare notebook and diary, between enamel book covers, in original leather case, formerly in the Max Strauss Collection, Vienna a French silver-mounted rectangular buckle, with Neoclassical scene a squat round vinaigrette, with Monk enameled to lid an English silver-mounted flask-shaped flat scent bottle, enamelled with allegories of music and dancing an English oval agate patch box with enamel top, with the story of Moses and a rectangular box, with card and music playing themes, dedicated to Brother Chrestien, Surgeon of Louisbourg. The vinaigrette marked for Nrnmburg the book with a label for the Max Strauss collection The book 7/8 x 1 3/4 out of the case the music box 1 5/8 H. x 3 1/4 x 2 1/4. By descent from the Kaumheimer family, Stuttgart, Germany. One deep and two shallow hairline cracks to the book covers chip to enamels at 11 oclock on the enamel cover to the agate box. Otherwise, the bases of most with typical wear. Miniature enamelled books, still intact with their original cases are quite rare. Too, for the German and French reader, the written script on each page gives a glimpse to life in the late 18th Century.

The first and second possibly Italian the third by an Italian of a German child. Late 18th Century, the first the second circa 1770 the last circa 1870. Comprising a double sided glass reliquary miniature with brass rim and loop, enclosing a paper cut-out and ink depiction of St. George slaying the Dragon, the verso filled with gilt metal filigree and green glass wrapped in gilt wire anotherdouble sided glass miniature, ink and graphite drawing of a raven haired beauty and her daughter, on paper, probably Italian School. The verso, covered in blue silk, and with a blue export sticker. Held together with a screw-top gilt brass band. The last a watercolor on vellum backed by foil, quintet of portraits of young girls, all red heads with blue hair possibly five sisters, or possibly one portrait of the same girl over time. All within a pale blue clouded background. Signed Carelli A. to lower center. Under glass, in a square ebonized wood frame, with gilt brass roundel. Only the last item is signed Carelli, A. The quintile drawing and the St. George reliquary both with Samlung Kaumheimer stickers to backs. 3 7/8 H. x 3 1/4, the reliquary 4 H. x 2 3/4 the second the third 5 1/4 square framed 2 3/4 diameter sight. The St. George possibly cut out from an illustrated manuscript, with crinkled paper.

Two Pairs of Chinese Jade Trees on Cloisonne Bases
The first a rounded turquoise ground jardiniere with two opposing gilt foo dog masks suspending rings, enameled with various flowers, bearing jade leaves and flowers carved from translucent stones of white, pale pink, and variegated carnelian tones the second with four faceted sides decorated with a scrolling lotus design against a white ground, the sturdily assembled trunk issuing translucent carnelian hardstone flowers. Tallest: 24 inches (61 cm).
Carved in the shape of a ruyi head from the stone of a pale celadon tone, decorated with the God of Longevity Shou holding a peach in the left hand and a crutch with a double gourd in the right hand, young immortal holding a globular box, and his twin holding grapes in a recumbent position, decorated in relief around the edges with a pair of cranes, double gourds, and Buddhas hand citrons, inscribed ru yi fu shou in zhuanshu script with a square seal mark to the back, with a stylized cloud-shaped wood base. Each intricately decorated with a parcel-gilt scrolling lotus pattern against dark blue ground, the upper body with taotie masks and a yellow ground medallion containing stylized double phoenixes above a band of overlapping lotus petals, the lower body with reserves enclosing various bird and flower designs above a similar lotus lappets, leiwen borders around the mouth, waist, and the foot, apocryphal four-character Yongzheng mark in blue to the base. The first of black silk satin, embellished with four large ruyi pendants encircled by turquoise ground bands of butterflies alternating with various flowers, the sleeve bands embroidered in couched metal threads on a midnight-blue ground with miscellaneous motifs including double peaches and lotus spray, frog fastener to the front the second decorated with a similar ruyi-shaped design accentuated by deep purple piping, the pale bluish-gray borders and sleeve bands executed in polychrome silk floss with various bird and flower motifs, frog fastener to the front. Longest: 38 inches (96.5 cm). Condition: The first with extensive wear.
