19th Century Naga Tribe Headhunter Warriors Authentic Head Taking Belt, Circa 1890

Lot# 8

Leather backed with hand carved bone spacers between each of the nine lost wax sand cast bronze heads organic rattan / sinew fiber is used to tie the belt together and employed to attach the brass pendents to the leather. The 9 brass heads represent 9 head hunting victims that were taken by the Naga headhunter warrior that wore this belt, signifying status, honor and wealth.

In 1883, the Irish artist, Henry Jones Thaddeus arrived in Florence. According to Brendan Rooney, (Thaddeus, Dublin, 2003) Thaddeus was introduced to the Duke in the autumn of that year and a great friendship was formed, thereby giving Thaddeus complete to his family. Portraits of the Duke and the Duchess were commissioned and these appeared at the Royal Academy, London, in 1884. In the following year, he painted a formal portrait of Princess May and when the Tecks went to Switzerland, he was also invited, and at Bodensee, he painted a second portrait of the Princess. Both paintings remain untraced although one of them was exhibited at the Irish Exhibition, Olympia, 1888, number 74.

Provenance: In 1957, Eberhardt graduated with a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Tbingen, in Baden-WrVemberg, Germany, after which he migrated to the USA. Between 1957-1962, Dr. Eberhardt did postdoctoral studies at the University of Chicago, Arkansas and Notre Dame, followed by a two-year Fellowship at the Mellon Institute at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1964, he was o ered a position at the University of Puerto Rico Nuclear Center, which gave him the opportunity to continued his research in free radical chemistry. Although the Nuclear Center was closed, Dr. Angel Romn Franco, his angel of fate, hired him to work at the Cancer Center. In 1982, he became Assistant Professor at the Pathology Department of the UPRs School of Medicine. In 1995, Dr. Eberhardt was promoted to full-me Professor and eventually rered. In 2000, Dr. Eberhardt published the scientic monograph Reactive Oxygen Metabolites. Chemistry and Medical Consequences. In 2007, his book Life and Death in an Oxygen Atmosphere was published. In the early 1980s, Manfred started taking sculpture classes at the Escuela de Artes Plscas under the direction of Melquiades Rosario Sastre and later also under Andrs Sierra. He discovered a new passion in his life: sculpting. In 1988, he did a workshop on Modelling the Head and Figure under Bruno Lucchesi, and by 1990, he was immersed in marble sculpng at the Art Institute of Pietrasanta, Italy, the medieval town in Tuscany which he tried to visit every year to work on his marble statues.
