Bennington, Vermont.
Circa 1875.
Modelled sanding on rectangular stepped bases, each with an opposing front paw on a ball, tails curled up and over their backs, tongues prominent among their broad manes.
Unmarked. One with what is possibly an old accession number typewritten on cello-tape, now long gone, but the residual number 779B is present to the underside of the base.
10 H. x 12 3/4 W. x 5 3/4 D., the taller. The smaller 9 7/8 H. x 13 W. x 5 3/4 D.
Very good condition. No chips or crack observed. The treacle glaze is typically splotchy toward the bases, with uneven coverage of the surface, as manufactured.

Oak case with arched hood and three carved large giltwood figures above an arched door, turned ebonized quarter columns a 30 hour weight driven time/strike/alarm movement with original painted tin dial and cast spandrels, the dial is painted with a military motif including an automaton of equestrian soldiers shaped lower case with small pendulum window. Lacking weights, pendulum included.

CONDITION: In overall good condition, the canvas has been relined and heavily varnished. When we attempted to look under black light the varnish is foggy and it was hard to see anything. But with the naked eye you can see there have been repairs most notably in the foliage on the left edge there looks to be a 5 inch vertical crack in the paint which has been repaired. Some blanching in the blue of the dress and the foliage in the bottom half of the canvas. Substantial crackling throughout the canvas both in the figure and the in the background. Pressure dents along all four sides from the stretcher bars only visible upon close inspection. Visible in painting in the background on the both the right and left of the figure. The bottom of the dress and the foliage have been over cleaned, possibly scrubbed. Please see images for additional information.

Notes: Mignon is the first of Rodins portraits of Rose Beuret, a seamstress he met in 1864 who became his studio helper, the mother of his son Auguste-Eugne, and his lifelong companion. They married only in 1917, the year they both died, she of pneumonia, and he several months later from complications of a stroke.
The title of this lively and informal portrait may refer to an 1866 opra comique of the same name by Ambroise Thomas, based on a character in Goethes 1796 novel Wilhelm Meisters Apprenticeship.
